Greg Young is the visionary founder behind the phenomenal success of BSc (Body Science International), a leader in the Australian sports supplement industry founded in 1999. With 25 years of dedication, Greg's journey with BSc is a testament to his passion for innovation and excellence in elevating athletic performance.
Greg made it his mission to revolutionise sports nutrition, a transformative shift in the culture of locker rooms across sporting clubs. Gone are the days when athletes celebrated with drinking beers, smoking cigarettes, and eating pies. Instead, Greg championed a new era of health and wellness, emphasising the importance of proper nutrition for optimal performance and well-being.
This achievement also marked a departure from the traditional perception of supplements, which were initially associated with bodybuilders. As the new millennium approached, a growing consciousness about health and fitness emerged, sparking a surge of interest in sports nutrition.
“Bodybuilders were 3% of the market,” says Greg, “but I was looking after the other 97%. I wasn’t a bodybuilder and didn’t want to go down that route, I wanted to go into sports. We’ve always stayed true to that, and even though our focus on sport had no immediate financial impact on the company it always gave us credibility and something to talk about. Our competitors had hulking musclemen on the front of their tins,” says Greg, “whereas we were putting our product in sports clubs and talked to a lot of female athletes. We were very different in our approach, and the first sportspeople we put on were all Olympians or mainstream athletes.”
In 2002, Greg Young experienced a breakthrough moment when Ronnie Palmer, the conditioning coach for the Sydney Roosters in the National Rugby League, approached him seeking assistance for his struggling team. Despite initial skepticism, Greg presented the team with a comprehensive supplement program, including creatine, protein, glutamine, HMB, and other recovery aids.
In return for their support, BSc secured prominent branding opportunities, including logo placement on the corner posts at the ground and the Roosters' shorts. A serendipitous mishap led to the team donning all-white uniforms for the first time in club history, culminating in a pivotal victory against the Broncos. The Roosters' subsequent decision to continue wearing all-white uniforms proved instrumental, leading to their first premiership win in 27 years during the Grand Final, a historic moment broadcast globally.
This transformative experience catapulted BSc into the limelight, sparking conversations about the efficacy of sports supplements and nutrition strategies in professional sports. It marked a turning point in the sporting landscape, transitioning from post-game beers and cigarettes to strategic protein strategies and dietary considerations. Greg's innovative approach to sports nutrition positioned BSc as a trusted partner for elite athletes and professional sports teams, solidifying their reputation as industry leaders.
