What is shredding? Tips on how to make it happen…
When you increase your weight during a season of bulking and adding muscle, some of the mass you've accumulated may have been in the form of fat. Now it's time to work on shredding exercises, the correct diet and shred supplements so that you can reduce fat mass and emphasise the muscle you've gained.
So what is shredding?
Shredding is a course of action that looks to eliminate body fat and/or water weight in order to improve the definition of your build. There are two primary components to consider when you want to shred.
Shredding in Your Diet
A diet that focuses on cutting fat and preserving muscle is known as a cutting or shredding diet. Bodybuilders and fitness enthusiasts commonly use the cutting diet as a short-term strategy before an event, competition, or during their training routine. It's also becoming more common for people looking to shred before the summer so they can feel 100 % confident in an outfit that may be a little more revealing. Lifting weights aids in the retention of muscular tissue while you cut calories, and it's crucial to do them cohesively.
Shredding in Your Workout
A shred workout should focus on low-intensity exercises. Commonly, individuals prioritise cardiovascular activity to the maximum extent feasible, but this type of exercise will use glycogen as energy and muscle as a reserve.
You want your heart rate to sit in the fat-burning zone. If you wish to calculate where your fat-burning zone sits here is a rough formula. Subtract your age from 220 - 70 % of this number is your fat-burning zone. If you’re not great with percentages, you can always use the percentage calculator.
Here is an example:
- James is 26
- 220-26 = 194 (maximum heart rate).
- 70 % of 194 = 135 bpm
James’ fat-burning zone sits at 135 bpm.
Walking outside or on a treadmill, jogging, distance walking, swimming, cycling, or the utilisation of specific exercise equipment like an elliptical machine are all examples of effective cardiovascular exercises, that will allow you to sit in the fat-burning zone.
